'Son of God' Hauls in $1.2 Million in Thursday Night Screenings

The new film Son of God is off to a blessed box office start.

The movie, spun from the popular miniseries The Bible, hauled in $1.2 million during Thursday evening screenings.

That’s more than Non-Stop, the latest action film from Liam Neeson. That feature made $720,000 during the same time frame.

Son of God, despite a lack of marquee names and a modest budget, could end up winning the weekend despite strong competition from both Non-Stop and The Lego Movie, the winner of the last three box office weekends. As of noon PST Thursday, Son of God represented 40 percent of ticket sales at Fandango.com.

The film’s success may not end with its theatrical run. A survey of 1,000 people who bought tickets at Fandango.com for Son of God found 54 percent planning to buy the film when it comes out on digital download, Blu-ray or DVD.
