ABC's 'Modern Family' to Air Same-Sex Wedding Episode Tonight

The gay couple featured on the Emmy-winning comedy Modern Family will make their bond official tonight.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson, the actor who plays Mitch on the ABC series, teased tonight’s episode via his Twitter account. The Tweet linked to a photo taken from the wedding-themed installment. Mitchell is standing next to his partner, Cam (Eric Stonestreet) while daughter Lily is a few feet ahead of them.

The series has always featured Mitch and Cam as a monogamous couple, but this year the writers decided to concoct a marriage subplot in light of recent headlines involving same-sex marriage.

Show co-creator Christopher Lloyd says the fictional wedding hasn’t drawn as much negative attention as it once might have.

Something like this 10 years ago would have made a splash,” he says. “It will jar some people, but hopefully the much more prevalent reaction will be people saying, ‘Oh, that reminds me of my wedding day.’

The first of the two-part wedding storyline airs at 9 p.m. tonight on ABC.
