Captain America: The Winter Soldier is now 2014’s top box office film domestically, having passed The Lego Movie this week. Film has also amassed over 700+ million worldwide.
The film’s rise also marks an incredible shift in the film industry; the pro-military Captain America is a far cry from the film industry’s more recent stance of portraying U.S. military soldiers as unhinged servants of a corrupt corporate nation, as seen in Green Zone, Lions for Lambs, and Brothers, among others. These films all became bombs at the box office.
The recent success of the stellar Lone Survivor also shows how films highlighting heroic soldiers make for great box office. Makes one wonder why it took so long for Hollywood to realize as much.
