In 2013, Scottish Vine sensation Ryan McHenry became famous for creating a series of wildly popular Internet memes that saw Hollywood A-lister Gosling refusing to eat cereal. That same year, McHenry was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, an aggressive form of bone cancer.

Aptly titled Ryan Gosling Won’t Eat His Cereal, the six-second video clips featured McHenry placing a spoonful of the snack near the actor’s face in front of a television, and in perfect timing, made it appear as though he detested the very sight of cereal.

The clips went viral–so viral that according to the Scottish Daily Record, Gosling previously acknowledged them during an interview.

McHenry lost his two-year battle with osteosarcoma Sunday evening at the age of 27, breaking the hearts of Vine, Twitter, and YouTube users alike. But, in his passing, the man who brought laughter to so many, seemingly accomplished what he had originally set out to do at the beginning of his Vine project.

McHenry told The Verge in 2013 that, ultimately, he hoped the actor would respond to the joke: “As a filmmaker, I like to have a conclusion to things. The only conclusion I can see out of this whole thing is to have Ryan Gosling respond to this. Even if it’s just him eating cereal.”

In April, during a Q&A Twitter conversation to promote an upcoming film, the Drive star was asked:

He responded:

Monday night, Ryan Gosling created his own Vine account, and currently has only one post:

He later said, “My heart goes out to all of Ryan McHenry’s family and friends. Feel very lucky to have been apart of his life in some small way.”

Vine also paid tribute to the man on Twitter Monday:
