No one can pressure the Associated Press to cover the Obama Administration with a tenth the energy it put towards George W. Bush, but a little uproar from activists and the AP rolls over in record time. Under assault from the left for a memo that instructed staffers to refer to those in same-sex marriages as “partners” or “couples” (instead of “wife” and “husband”), the AP has now reversed course:
husband, wife Regardless of sexual orientation, husband or wife is acceptable in all references to individuals in any legally recognized marriage. Spouse or partner may be used if requested.
If you think about it, the whole controversy was rather silly. Even if you oppose same-sex marriage (as I do), if a couple is legally married, why wouldn’t you refer to them as a husband or wife? You don’t have to like the agenda behind it, but that is who they legally are.
