PolitiFact: White House Claim Susan Rice 'Didn't Play Down' Terror Angle Is Not True

It only took eight months but finally the left-wing media is starting to hold the Obama Administration responsible for its brazen lies surrounding the weeks-long cover up in the aftermath of the terror attack in Libya.

Tuesday morning, the Washington Post destroyed Obama’s claim he had called Libya an act of terror the day after the attack. Politifact also jumped in with both feet against White House spokesman Jay Carney’s absurd claim, in a Friday afternoon press briefing, that UN Ambassador Susan Rice had not played down the fact that Libya was an act of terror during her round robin appearance on all five Sunday talk shows a few days after the attack:

Carney said that Rice “talked about the possibility that al-Qaida might be involved, or other al-Qaida affiliates might be involved, or non-al-Qaida Libyan extremists (might be involved), which I think demonstrates that there was no effort to play that down.”

It’s true that Rice offered those three scenarios, but Carney is wrong to say she didn’t play them down. Rice barely mentioned the potential role of al-Qaida or one of its affiliates, and she urged caution about jumping to conclusions on the one occasion in which she did.

And while she did point to a role for “extremists,” Rice made clear that the extremists didn’t pre-plan the attack, but instead hijacked a demonstration that was already under way.

Both decisions played down, to one degree or another, each of the three scenarios she mentioned. We rate Carney’s claim Mostly False.

Anyone who cares about the truth knew this was all a house of lies when it actually happened in mid-September of last year. The media, though, wasn’t interested because they desperately wanted to drag Obama over his reelection finish line.

Maybe now that Obama Justice Department is digging into the media’s phones records, they’re starting to wake up.
