State Department Blasts Assad's Instagram Account

On Wednesday, the State Department ripped into Syrian President Bashar Assad’s Instagram account, calling it “nothing more than a despicable PR stunt.” The Instagram account features Assad meeting reveling Syrians, including children. Assad’s wife, Asma, shows up in the photos as well to greet children and their mothers. “It’s repulsive that the Assad regime would use this to gloss over the brutality and suffering it is causing,” said State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf. “To see what’s really happening right now in Syria, to see the horrific atrocities in Homs and elsewhere, we would encourage people to take a look at unfiltered photos of what’s actually happening on the ground…[the photos are] not indicative of the horrific situation on the ground that [Assad] is causing for his own people.”

The Instagram account has 5,200 followers and 73 photos. Syrian TV is also pushing full-time propaganda for the Assad regime.

The Obama administration has never seen fit to criticize the Hamas Twitter account.
