CNN Ditches Politics for Whale Movie, Wins Demo

CNN’s whale documentary won the news demographic when it debuted on October 14 with a rare victory over Fox News and trouncing MSNBC during the 9 PM – 11 PM time slot.

The cable news network’s new line of documentary films debuted with Blackfish, a documentary that traces the 39-year history of killer whales in captivity and a spate of deaths connected to one of them.

CNN wrangled an average of 472,000 in the news demo for the time slot, Fox brought in 331,000, and MSNBC came in last with a distant 235,000.

CNN did even better with the coveted 18 to 49-year old demographic, raking in an impressive 688,000 viewers compared to Fox’s 216,000. MSNBC garnered only 173,000 viewers.

By 11 PM, the Anderson Cooper-anchored special, Inside Blackfish, topped MSNBC in the 25-54 demo and total viewers with a 231,000 to 74,000 spread. But Fox News regained the lead, averaging 334,000 viewers in the 25-54 demographic and 1.2 million total during the 11 PM period.
