Austerity: the word becomes the deed

In response to NY Times Seeks Help for “Premature Austerity”:

“Premature austerity?”  One increasingly gets the impression that merely thinking about austerity is now entirely synonymous with the deed itself.  Somehow an American government that spends over three and a half trillion dollars a year, borrowing 40 cents of every dollar it spends, is on the verge of collapsing with exhaustion from all this “austerity.”  To tie into the other meme of the day, it’s like a morbidly obese person worn out from all the talk about “dieting,” and badly in need of a pick-me-up donut.

I think maybe we’re supposed to apologize to the ruling class for merely talking about giving them less money to spend.  That must have really hurt their feelings.  They might even have lost a bit of sleep the night after the first presidential debate.
