Actor Nick Searcy, who plays Timothy Olyphant’s boss on “Justified,” is a conservative who maintains a highly entertaining Twitter feed. He made a very good point about this week’s episode of “The Walking Dead:”
I don’t understand this last episode of #TheWalkingDead: when the woman had her nasty gun taken away from her, she should have been safer!

On Sunday night’s episode of “The Walking Dead,” entitled “Prey,” the Governor’s head goon forced Andrea to hand over her gun and ammo. Minor spoiler alert: That didn’t work out so well for Andrea when she left Woodbury and had to battle human and formerly-human monsters with only a knife…
As we’ve been told, only an “idiot” thinks shooting an attacker prevents an attack and women really can’t be trusted with guns anyway. Instead of trying to bitterly cling to her firearms, she should have perfected the womanly art of menstruating on demand to deter zombies and psychos.
It’s a core belief of the gun-control crowd that having a gun makes law-abiding citizens less safe. Rape victim Amanda Collins, who was assaulted in a campus “gun-free zone,” was told by a gun-control nut in the Colorado legislature that if she’d been carrying her licensed firearm it would have been worse, because her assailant would have simply taken her gun away and attacked her with it. (Even though said scumbag was already carrying a gun, having somehow mysteriously resisted the hypnotic power of the “gun-free zone” signs.)
Another Colorado lunatic, State Rep. Joe Salazar, worried that hysterical wimmenfolk might start shooting people at random if they were allowed to pack heat: “And you don’t know if you feel like you’re gonna be raped, or if you feel like someone’s been following you around or if you feel like you’re in trouble when you may actually not be, that you pop out that gun and you pop … pop a round at somebody.”
And gun-control nuts have lately been giving women absurdly ineffective “advice” for dealing with violent attackers without arming themselves, including witty banter, false threats of sexually transmitted diseases, and vomiting or urination to scare off rapists.
Pop culture and politics are tightly fused together in today’s America, so it’s interesting to note that not only did this particular episode of “The Walking Dead” run counter to gun-control mythology, but the entire concept of zombie Armageddon (or really any desperate survival scenario, including far more plausible ones) makes a strong point about the importance of armed citizens insisting on their right to self-defense.
The survival of the character Searcy refers to depended on her improbable ability to defeat several of the walking dead with a very small knife, which makes the show’s assumption that these fragile, shambling dolts somehow managed to overwhelm the armed forces of humanity deeply suspect.
And “The Walking Dead” has offered a couple of you-gotta-be-kidding-me scenes relating to gun control in the past, where various survivors of the zombie apocalypse were told they could not be trusted to carry guns, or informed that the farm where they took refuge was a gun-free zone. Sorry, but that should have provoked barks of incredulous laughter from every thinking viewer. Whatever your current opinion of firearms, you had better be ready to assume the classic bumper-sticker attitude of “from my cold, dead hands” when civilization collapses.
