A letter was sent to President Barack Obama yesterday, demanding Obama consult with Congress and seek authorization before any military strikes are launched against Syria. The letter is below. Thirty-three members have signed the letter.
Rep. Scott Rigel (R-VA) wrote “Engaging our military in Syria when no direct threat to the United States exists and without prior congressional authorization would violate the separation of powers that is clearly delineated in the Constitution.”
It goes on to ask: “If the use of 221 Tomahawk cruise missiles, 704 Joint Direct Attack Munitions, and 42 Predator Hellfire missiles expended in Libya does not constitute ‘hostilities,’ what does?”
Congress is set to return on September 9, but Obama has suggested attacks on Syria may start in the immediate future. Obama has an extensive history of circumventing Congress and acting unilaterally on a variety issues. The President also authorized military action against Libya without Congressional approval in 2011.
