More deep Russian thoughts about American exceptionalism

Details are still emerging about a horrific shooting at the Washington Navy Yard.  We’re still in the media quantum zone where each report conflicts every other report – at the time of this writing, there’s still confusion about how many shooters were involved – but it seems clear there were fatalities.

We should all send our thoughts and prayers to the victims and their families.  They certainly don’t want to make do with certain Russian thoughts about the incident.  Russian official Alexey Pushkov, chief of parliamentary foreign affairs, decided this would be a good time to twist the knife and make a crack about American exceptionalism.

“A new shootout at Navy headquarters in Washington – a lone gunman and 7 corpses,” said Pushkov via Twitter.  “Nobody’s even surprised anymore.  A clear confirmation of ‘American exceptionalism.'”

He followed up with a little advice for us: “The USA should part with the notion of American exceptionalism.  It contradicts the principles of equal rights and smells of political racism.”

It’s too bad we don’t have a President who can respond to this.  Pushkov might just have managed to politicize this horror faster than David Frum, which is no mean feat.
