The Obama Administration's Delusional Iran Deal

After Iran’s foreign minister declared to CNN yesterday that under the interim nuclear deal, “we did not agree to dismantle anything,” an Obama administration official told CNN’s Jake Tapper: “We expected the Iranians would need to spin this for domestic political purposes and are not surprised they are doing just that.”

That excuse underscores how delusional the Obama administration is about the Iran deal–a deal so bad that even Obama ally Fareed Zakaria describes it as a “train wreck.” The idea that Iran might be spinning the deal for domestic consumption might be valid with regard to public speeches by the Iranian president declaring that the “superpowers” have “surrendered” to Iran. In this case the message was delivered to CNN–i.e. to an American journalist, for American consumption, with no fear of how the American government might react to the “spin.”

Iran’s government is not the only one capable of “spin” for domestic political purposes, of course. The Obama administration has been spinning the deal as something it is not for months now. That is partly an attempt to boost the president’s flagging image. It is also, perhaps, a sign that the White House buys its own propaganda.
