Red Hot Chili Peppers: We Faked Super Bowl Performance So As Not to ‘Pretend’… Or Something

The Red Hot Chili Peppers have officially admitted that they faked portions of their performance with Bruno Mars at the Super Bowl last weekend. Part of the reason they did so, according to the band, is that the NFL insisted the sound for the performance be perfect, and there would have been no way to guarantee that with all the dancers, performers, set changes, drunken Seahawks fans and all the rest of it. So far, so good (sort of).

But them comes the weird part. The musicians left their instruments unplugged, according to bass guitarist Flea, because it would have been more deceptive to fake-play them if they looked like they were actually on.

“Could we have plugged them in and avoided bumming people out who have expressed disappointment that the instrumental track was pre recorded? Of course easily we could have and this would be a non-issue. We thought it better to not pretend. It seemed like the realest thing to do in the circumstance,” he said. I don’t know–if you think it “better to not pretend,” why not… refuse to perform? I think we know the answer. So why lie about it?
