Baby Hippopotamus Born in San Diego Zoo

Visitors to the San Diego Zoo were treated to the uncommon spectacle on Sunday: the birth of a hippopotamus.

The baby, weighing an estimated 40-45 lbs. (18-20 kg.), was born to parents Funani and Otis on March 29. It swam happily near its mother while Otis sulked on the other side of the pond. Female hippos defend their young fiercely against possible aggression by the males. On top of the cuteness, visitors saw at least one fight.
