Voters seeking to keep a close eye on their representatives in the Texas Legislature will have an easier time of it thanks to improvements made during the off season period. The Texas House Administration Committee, responsible for oversight of the video feed for the House, Senate, committee meetings and other activities at the Texas Capitol announced several improvements for those who watch the proceedings online.
In a statement released by the Texas House of Representatives, Committee Chairman Charlie Geren (R-Fort Worth) said, “These new tools will significantly expand public access to the Texas Legislature. Now, many more Texans will have the opportunity to directly view their elected representatives at work. “
According to the statement submitted to Breitbart Texas, the old video system would only allow bandwidth for 2,500 viewers at any one time. Those restrictions are removed under the new system. The improved service from the Texas Legislature now also provides for more simultaneous legislative meetings to be viewed live than were previously available under the old system.
The Texas House unveiled the system during a committee meeting of the Human Services Committee and the Criminal Jurisprudence Committee. The archives of these pilot meetings can be found on the Texas House Committee Broadcast Archives webpage. Two additional committees are scheduled for broadcast today–the Select Committee for Criminal Procedure Reform and Public Education. The meetings will be streamed live beginning at 10 a.m. CDT.
The Texas Senate will unveil their new system in the near future, according to the announcement.
“This is an important step,” Geren concluded, “toward greater transparency in state government.”
