Katie 2.0? Couric, NBC Plot Return to 'Today'

Katie Couric broke boundaries by tackling the male-dominated world of nightly newscasts and, recently, signed on with Yahoo to cover news for the online portal.

That’s the positive spin on her post-Today show career.

Her CBS newscast ratings never measured up to her massive contract. Not even close. And her subsequent TV talk show, Katie, didn’t last past its second season, with one executive dubbing it an “unmitigated disaster.”

Now, Couric is looking back for her future. She’s in talks to rejoin Today on a temporary basis–for now.

NBC is having conversations with Katie Couric about filling in for Savannah Guthrie when Guthrie goes on maternity leave during the summer. Nothing is set, and the news division also is talking to others about helping out while Guthrie’s gone, including Natalie Morales — and Meredith Vieira  who had Guthrie’s job a few years ago (pre-Ann Curry) and could use the platform to help plug the launch of her daytime talk show in the fall.
