Shooting at 1-Year-Old's Birthday Party in Sacramento

A birthday party for a 1-year-old child in Sacramento on Saturday turned bloody, leaving one man dead and six others injured, including a 7-year-old, as gunmen accosted the group and started firing.

The party, in the Natomas area at Peregrine Park, was hit at roughly 5 p.m., according to Officer Doug Morse, a spokesman for the Sacramento police. Although police would not release a description of the shooters, there is a good chance they will be found, Morse said: “There were so many eyewitnesses. Detectives are trying to talk to everyone they can.” He added that the six other victims’ injuries were not in life-threatening, and said, “Some folks approached the party, shots were fired. Our gang detectives were called out so we are going to try to get to the bottom of that

According to ABC News, police think the man who died was a gang member. The Sacramento Bee said that Denise James acknowledged he was her 29-year-old son-in-law. She said he had a young son who would now grow up without a father.

Some of the injured were reportedly able to drive to hospitals themselves; some were taken by friends or family, and some went by ambulance. After the shooting, roughly a dozen people formed a circle, praying with a chaplain. James said simply, “They came in the party and shot my son-in-law. They took him away too early,” the Bee reports.
