San Diego Tops Amazon's List of America's Most Well-Read Major Cities

Launching a reading list for the summer season, Amazon has released its ranking of America’s most well read cities. Topping the list of most well-read cities over one million residents is San Diego, California.

Print and Kindle sales of books, magazines and newspapers were the measure Amazon used to determine the ranking. Information was collected for the year between April 2013 and 2014. Little information was available regarding the categorical breakdown for the various cities.

San Diego’s recently elected Republican Mayor Kevin Faulconer, released a budget proposal in April that would increase hours at the main and 23 branch library locations in San Diego according to the Union-Tribune. The estimated increase in costs for expanded hours is $1.4 million, tied to hiring of 16 additional employees.

San Diego also ranks as the largest U.S. city with a Republican Mayor according to the L.A. Times. After the short lived reign of philandering San Diego Mayor Bob Filner, a Democrat who defeated Republican challenger Carl DeMaio in 2012, the voters of the city returned to electing a Republican to fill the office. The three elected mayors prior to Filner were also Republican.

In the ranking of cities with over 100,000 residents, Alexandria, Virginia and Miami, Florida came out first and second. Based in Seattle, Washington, Amazon’s corporate home of Seattle, Washington was reported fourth on that list, a marked increase from their 2013 ranking at number 13.
