Palm Springs Film Festival Touts Big Names, Oscar Hopefuls

A star-studded silver screening showcasing 330 short films and 84 film premiers will be presented at the 20th Annual Palm Springs International ShortFest and Short Film Market at the Camelot Theatres from June 17-23, according to the Los Angeles Times

Films featuring Danny Devito and Sophia Lauren, along with shorts featuring the likes of Rose McGowan and Oscar Isaac, will be among the hundreds of films that could be selected for an Academy Award nomination. Only four winning films, which will be selected from four highly-competitive categories, will make it through. Over the last 19 years, 97 films which have been presented at the Palm Springs international film festival have gone on to an Oscar nomination, the Times notes.

Other rewards at the festival will include over $115,000 in prizes, including $21,000 in cash and a Panavision camera package, which is valued at $60,000.

The Festival’s director, Kathleen McInnis, is calling this year the year of “more” with “more films submitted from more countries than ever before” and “more high-profile actors lending their weight to the short films in our program,” writes the Times.

A full listing of the films to be featured will be released on June 8 and can be found by visiting www.psfilmfest.org.
