After Popping Shirt Button 'in Mexican Style,' LA Mayor Declares 2017 'the Year of Mexico'

At a Monday event in which California Governor Jerry Brown declared that all illegal immigrants from Mexico are welcome in California, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said 2017 would be “the year of Mexico” in Los Angeles.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto kicked off his two-day journey to California in Los Angeles and “was joined by a delegation of governors from several Mexican states.” Garcetti spoke in Spanish and reportedly said “the year of Mexico” in 2017 “would include celebrations of the contributions that Mexican-Americans have made to the city.”

According to a Register report, Garcetti, who reportedly has “Mexican roots on his father’s side,” emphasized that “Los Angeles has the largest concentration of Mexicans outside of Mexico,” but “first decided to look more like his companions on stage – Peña Nieto and the Mexican Consul General Carlos Sada – by popping his shirt button.”

“In the Mexican style,” Garcetti reportedly said to loud cheers.

Peña Nieto, according to various reports, said that the United States is “the other Mexico.”
