Man Allegedly Steals Ambulance Sent to Treat Him

A man being treated by paramedics on Sunday night in downtown Los Angeles stole the ambulance that was sent to treat him and led police on a chase before crashing into a minivan and sending two women to the hospital with minor injuries.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the incident occurred in the 200 block of North San Pedro Street at around 6:30 p.m. Sunday night.

Paramedics were reportedly treating the man when he ripped the IVs out of his arm and left the scene on foot. As the paramedics were cleaning out the back of the ambulance, the man returned, got into the driver’s seat, and sped away. The paramedics were able to exit the ambulance before the man drove off.

Sgt. Gia Rueda of the LAPD told the Los Angeles Times that the man led police on a chase that ended when the ambulance crashed into another vehicle at the intersection of Beverly Boulevard and Union Avenue at about 7:15 p.m. Two women who were in the vehicle were reportedly taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

According to KTLA, the man was suffering from “hallucinations” when paramedics responded, and allegedly told them he had taken “spice,” a form of synthetic marijuana.

The man, whose identity has not been released, was taken into custody at the Rampart Police Station. He is reportedly expected to be charged with carjacking and felony evading.
