Students at a California high school found their teacher hanging inside her classroom early Monday morning.

The female teacher at El Dorado High School in Placentia was found at 8:40 a.m., just before the start of the school day, according to CBS Los Angeles KNX1070’s Pete Demitriou.

Students arriving at their usual classroom found the door locked, reports CBS. When another teacher unlocked the door, the students and the other teacher reportedly rushed to help the hanging teacher down to the floor.

Placentia Police Lt. Eric Point told CBS that paramedics found the unidentified woman in full cardiac arrest, and were unable to revive her. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Although no note was found at the scene, police are reportedly treating the grisly incident as a suicide.

An El Dorado High School junior, identified only as Isaiah, told CBS that the entire school was shaken by the teacher’s passing.

“Just seeing people as I walk by really gets to me,” the student said. “I’ve hugged some friends. It’s made me cry.”

“We’ll have crisis counselors on staff all throughout the rest of the week,” Candy Plahy, Assistant Superintendent for Education at Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District, told CBS.

School officials reportedly gathered the entire student body in the gymnasium around 11 a.m. to inform them of the incident, after which students were dismissed for the rest of the day. Classes at El Dorado High School will resume tomorrow.
