A coyote brazenly snatched up an 8-year-old chihuahua from the bedroom of a Long Beach home–near the couple’s newborn granddaughter and two other chihuahuas.
The family is devastated.
“Someone who’s given you nothing but unconditional love for eight years and somebody who’s taken them just for a meal–it just wasn’t fair,” John Fischer who was at the home with his wife, their one-week old granddaughter and the dogs told local ABC News affiliate KTRK-TV.
Fischer was reportedly in his kitchen on Saturday around 7:45 p.m. when he heard his dogs barking. He did not make much of the barking because the couple was expecting company and thought the barks were in reaction to their guest’s arrival.
However, the coyote then emerged racing out of the bedroom and carrying his screaming Chihuahua Eloise. They searched for both animals but could not find them.

According to the Associated Press, Fischer said he usually closes the house at dusk because of coyote threats, but forgot to Monday night. The bedroom door opens up to the yard which is likely where the coyote emerged from the woods.
Coyotes and other wild animals have become much bolder as a result of California’s drought which has made food harder to find, forcing them into residential areas in search of nourishment.
A mountain lion emerged from the woods and into a San Jose residential area last October. And this past August, a large brown bear decided to cool off in the pool of a La Cañada Flintridge home. It enjoyed a few pomegranates from the homeowner’s tree before taking off.
