Hillary Clinton supports Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom’s push for background checks for ammunition purchasers, according to former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Villaraigosa “spoke on behalf of Hillary Clinton” at a May 16 roundtable discussion on gun control.

According to CBS Los Angeles, Villaraigosa said Clinton supports the ballot initiative “that requires background checks before buying ammunition.” Newsom is pushing the ammunition background checks as well as a ban on all detachable magazines holding more than ten rounds.

Villaraigosa also pointed out that Clinton supports the implementation of universal background checks on the national level and a ban on “assault weapons.”

It is interesting to note that California has universal background checks for firearms, and those checks have proven powerless to stop determined attackers.

Elliot Rodger passed a background check for the handgun he used to carry out his May 2014 Santa Barbara attack, and the handguns carried by Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik during their December 2015 San Bernardino attack were acquired via background checks as well.

The “assault weapons” ban Clinton is pushing is also a demonstrable failure. Chicago has such a ban in place, yet it had nearly 500 firearm-related deaths last year alone.
