Police were called on a Marine veteran who was holding a sign on Black Friday advertising for Firearms Unknown, a gun store in Oceanside.
The cardboard sign was shaped like an AR-15, and people “called the cops reporting a man with a fake rifle.”
According to 10 News, the veteran, going by the name Von, said people also drove by and flipped him the bird. He said others rolled down their car windows and yelled “some type of obscenity” at him.
Von is the manager at Firearms Unknown, which “sells gun parts.” Once the police were called, he said he found himself very frustrated that people were calling the cops on someone who was obviously holding a “flimsy” cardboard cutout of a gun for the purposes of advertisement.
Sistina Taele was in Oceanside from out of town. She said, “It looks like a machine gun. It is pretty aggressive.”
The police asked Von to find another means of advertising for the store, but he told them no. He said the request to put away a cardboard poster of a gun “was a slap in the face as a veteran.” He added that he remembers his fellow Marines dying for freedom–which includes the right to keep and bear arms–and he misses them.
Von added, “All the amendments matter. You hear about a lot of stuff today. You know this matters, that matters. Well I matter and my rights matter. Every American matters.”
