Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) on Wednesday praised Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the Democratic Socialist who ousted Rep. Joe Crowley (D-NY) Tuesday evening in a primary.

Harris reportedly said Ocasio-Cortez was “incredibly impressive” and added that she applauds “anyone who decides to run for office and [puts] themselves out there because they want to serve the country.”

Harris and Ocasio-Cortez have common ground on some left-wing policy goals. Ocasio-Cortez ran on a platform of Medicare for all and abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Harris has supported Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) Medicare for all legislation and over the weekend said she was open to disbanding ICE and “starting from scratch.”

“I think there’s no question that we’ve got to critically re-examine ICE, and its role, and the way that it is being administered, and the work it is doing. And we need to probably think about starting from scratch,” Harris said in an MSNBC interview. “There is a lot that is wrong with the way that it is conducting itself and we need to deal with that.”

Harris did not rule out a potential 2020 presidential run over the weekend and if she decides to seek her party’s nomination, she would have to appeal to the same types of left-wing voters that powered Ocasio-Cortez to her stunning upset victory over Crowley.
