Trump on Carson’s Religion: I Don’t know about Seventh Day Adventists

Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said he wasn’t trying to insult his rival Ben Carson’s Seventh Day Adventist religion explaining that it was his intention to say he wasn’t “familiar” with it.

When asked about Carson’s lead in Iowa Trump said, “I don’t understand Iowa I just left. We had tremendous crowds and tremendous enthusiasm and frankly even to be tied I’m a little surprised. I know that I’m very honored by what’s happened in New Hampshire and South Carolina it’s amazing results. Amazing. But I think that Iowa, it has that same in credible feeling, we had rally there the other day it was so intense and so much love in the room. I’m actually surprised. Wery surprised that I’m even tied in Iowa.”

Host John Dickerson asked “Let me ask you about some things you said about Ben Carson in Florida you said, ‘I’m Presbyterian. that’s down the middle of the road in all fairness. I mean, Seventh Day Adventist, I don’t know about.’ What did you mean by that?”

Trump answered, “Exactly what I said. I don’t know about that. I don’t know about what that is. I’m not that familiar with it. I’ve heard about it but I’m not that familiar with it. That wasn’t meant to be insult obviously just that I don’t know about it.”

Dickerson asked, “So an expression of ignorance not raising questions about it?”

Trump said, “Well that is harsh way of putting it. Perhaps I could say it that way because I don’t know. I said, I don’t know know about that.”
