Johnson: DACA Creates ‘Incentive’ for Families to Exploit ‘Our Very Loose Immigration Laws’

Thursday on Fox News Channel’s “America’s Newsroom,” Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) said the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy created “a greater incentive” for unaccompanied children and others illegally due to “legal loopholes.”

Johnson said, “Since 2013, over 200,000 unaccompanied children from Central America have come into this country, 225,000 family units double that. We’re looking at 750,000 unaccompanied children and family units that have basically exploited our very loose immigration laws and are by-in-large in this country.”

He continued, “Those are the ones that can really exploit our laws that have a lengthy adjudication process, that CBP turns over to ICE, who turns over to HHS. We’ve gotten good at apprehending, processing and disbursing, but the problem is once you get into the country, you stay. Less than 5% of unaccompanied children that have come in since Obama signed the DACA law, which doesn’t apply to them, but still sent a very strong signal if you get into America you can stay, and they have stayed, and it creates a greater incentive for more unaccompanied children and more family units coming to this country because of our legal loopholes.”

He added, “We first need to get our own house in order. We need to expose, what again too many members of Congress don’t realize, all the loopholes and legal precedence laws that created this flow. Our primary objective should be to stop or reduce the flow, and that’s working with Mexico and fixing our legal immigration system, our broken system.”
