'Modern Family' Star: Gay Benefits 'Defining Civil Rights Movement of Our Time'

Jesse Tyler Ferguson, the openly gay actor who is one of the stars of Modern Family, told Oprah Winfrey that the gay rights movement is “the defining civil rights movement of our time.”

Appearing on Oprah’s Next Chapter,” with comedienne Wanda Sykes and Scandal star Dan Bucatinsky, who are also openly gay, Ferguson said, “I do feel like this is the defining civil rights movement of our time. In every civil rights movement, it takes a long time. That’s just the way it is; history shows that. Obviously, I would like for this to move faster than it is and I would like for it to move without casualty.”

Bucatinsky echoed, “It’s generational, It’s going to unfortunately move slowly because we have to move an entire generation to not have conditional love for their kids–it has to be unconditional love for their kids. And we’re still not at the next generation.”

The episode with the three gay celebrities will air Oct. 27.
