MH370: Australian PM 'Very Confident' Signals Are From Missing Plane

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has said that authorities are confident that signals heard in the Indian Ocean over the past few days are from the black box of the missing Malaysia Airlines MH370 flight.

Speaking in China he said that teams had “very much narrowed down the search area” for the missing plane, adding “we’ve now had a series of detections, some for quite a long period of time.”

Adding a note of caution, he said: “Nevertheless, we’re now getting to the stage where the signal from what we are very confident is the black box is starting to fade, and we are hoping to get as much information as we can before the signal finally expires.”

Mr Abbott added that officials were confident they knew “the position of the black box flight recorder to within some kilometres”.

“Still, confidence in the approximate position of the black box is not the same as recovering wreckage from almost 4.5km [2.6 miles] beneath the sea, or finally determining all that happened on that flight,” said the Australian Prime Minister

A series of signals consistent with a black box have been received over the past few days, leading to search teams significantly narrowing the area where they plane may be resting.

Yesterday, an Australian Orion aircraft picked up another signal in the area where the others had been detected, but, according to the BBC, authorities have now analysed the data and confirmed that is was “unlikely to be related to the aircraft black boxes.”
