TEL AVIV – A senior Palestinian military commander and veteran terrorist was killed in a strike in Syria over the weekend that Syrian media outlets attributed to the IDF, Hebrew-language media reported.
Pamphlets published by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine: General Command (PFLP-GC) claimed that Abd al-Rahim Ahmed Atiq, a senior commander of the Jibril Front founded by terror leader Ahmed Jibril, was killed in a raid between Saturday and Sunday, Israeli news site nrg reported. The strike on the Naba Fawar base near Kuneitra claimed the lives of three regime fighters including Atik. Israel denied responsibility for the strike, Israeli news site nrg reported.
The Jibril Front is fighting on behalf of the Assad regime in Syria. According to the PFLP-GC, Atiq was a member of its advisory council and a senior military commander who led “numerous military campaigns against the Zionist enemy.”
A poster published by the terror organization said Atiq had commanded the cell responsible for the infamous “Night of the Gliders” terror attack in northern Israel in 1987. On that night, two Palestinian terrorists infiltrated Israel from southern Lebanon using hang gliders to launch a surprise attack on the IDF. While one was shot down by Israeli security forces, the second succeeded in infiltrating an IDF military base and managed to kill six soldiers and wound eight more before being shot dead.
