University of California, Berkeley police issued a security alert on Friday after a leader at the Theta Delta Chi fraternity claimed a member of his fraternity was sexually assaulted by another member.
The fraternity leader also told campus police there may be more victims, according to the Bay Area News Group. No details were available as to when the alleged assault took place.
Just one day earlier, UC Berkeley police had issued another security alert after receiving a report about a separate sexual assault at the Delta Kappa Epsilon house, a fraternity not officially recognized by the school.
According to Lt. Eric Tejada of the UC Berkeley police, an unidentified person told a campus security officer that five people had been drugged with rophyinol, otherwise known as the date-rape drug “roofies,” before being sexually assaulted at the fraternity house.
Lt. Tejada told the Bay Area News Group that Berkeley police were investigating the incidents but had not received any direct reports on the alleged assaults as of Friday. It it reportedly unclear if the incidents were related to hazing.
Charges were dropped Friday against a UC Berkeley student who had been charged with rape by use of drugs, after prosecutors determined that the accused student was innocent. An attorney for the student told the San Francisco Chronicle that his client and his family “suffered greatly” from the false charge and subsequent news coverage.
