Two Spanish motorcyclists lost their lives in a California race on Sunday.

“We are deeply saddened to learn the news of the passing of Bernat Martinez and Daniel Rivas,” Gill Campbell, CEO and general manager of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, said in a statement. “Our prayers and hearts go out to their families and teams.”

A multi-bike crash occurred on the first lap of the race on a track near Monterey. The bikers average speeds well over 100 miles-per-hour during races. The cascading calamity occurred about tens seconds into the event on a straightaway. The bikers affected by the crash appeared to come from the back rows during the start.

“I really don’t have any words to describe what we all feel,” MotoAmerica President Wayne Rainey said in a statement. “First and foremost, is the loss to the families and loved ones. Our sincere condolences goes out to each and every one of them as well as the MotoAmerica family. They are in our thoughts and prayers.”
