Community members in Adel, Iowa, are offering their support to a family who lost all they had in a fire over the weekend.
When Jodi Cook woke up Saturday just before 7 a.m., she had no idea her life was about to take a drastic turn, according to Fox 17.
“My dogs woke me up and at that point, it was pretty much completely engulfed in flames,” the single mom commented.
When fire and rescue crews arrived at the house located at 421 N. 9th Street, it was too late to save the Cook’s home of 19 years, according to Adel Fire Department Capt. Jim Uthe.
“There were flames coming out of the east side of the house probably ten feet tall. There was a power line down off the front of the house blocking our access,” he said.
However, when the community heard about the family’s loss, they decided to do something to help them get back on their feet.
“When we found out about Jodi losing her home, it was important for us to feel like we could give people a safe place to take a donation and to help contribute and help where we could in some small way,” said Marie Hansen of Harvey’s Greenhouse, a local garden center that has been in business for over 100 years.
The garden center began collecting donations for the Cook family while the Big Deal Car Care company offered to detail Jodi’s smoke-filled vehicle, free of charge.
The company’s owner, Dylan Book, stated:
We come together as a whole when it means the most. The community of Adel, just like this event here, will rally up behind them, help support them with whatever they need, whether it’s monetary, clothes, anything, obviously even a vehicle detail. And Adel just does that. I don’t know why we do that but that is what keeps our community growing and is so successful.
Jodi said she was thankful for her neighbor’s outpouring of support and generosity during such a difficult time.
“I am so grateful. My heart is touched just so deeply because of the kindness that I’ve seen,” she concluded.
