A Moroccan man living near Bologna in Northern Italy has been arrested after allegedly keeping his pregnant wife captive, beating and starving her in a bid to force her to have an abortion.
The Local reported that the man was caught after his wife escaped her capitivity in the family home and went to the authorities: “The mistreatment was aimed at terminating his wife’s two-month pregnancy, as he did not want her to have the baby.”
He is now facing charges of abuse and kidnapping, police said.
