At least six people have been injured following drive-by shootings in Macerata, Italy.

One suspect named locally as 28-year-old Luca Traini, an Italian from the surrounding Le Marche region, has been detained, the BBC reports.

He was wearing the Italian flag around his neck at the time of the arrest, and reportedly made a fascist salute as he was taken into custody.

His victims, one of whom is said to be in a serious condition, were all black migrants, suggesting a possibility of far-right terrorism.

The BBC is speculating that the shootings were so-called “revenge attacks” for the recent murder of 18-year-old Pamela Mastropietro, whose dismembered body was found on the street in two suitcases last Wednesday, covered in bleach to try and disguise the fact she had been raped.

Innocent Oseghale, a Nigeran migrant, was arrested following the murder, and some of today’s shootings took place in areas which are being investigated in connection with the crime.

Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni has suspended campaigning for the Italian elections, due to take place on March 4th, in the wake of the shootings.
