Egyptian President Morsi to Host Hamas Official

On June 29, Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi declared “people power” in a speech ostensibly meant to make him sound less like a radical and more like a man of the people. But now, less than a week from that declaration, it’s been learned that this man of the people will be hosting Gaza’s Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh for talks.

A spokesman for Haniyeh claims the stated purpose of the trip is discuss trade and border issues between Egypt and Gaza, but does anyone really believe the shared hatred of Israel won’t at least lead to some discussion of a shared dream of Israel’s demise? After all, Haniyah is a member of Hamas and Hamas is “an offshoot of Morsi’s region-wide Muslim Brotherhood movement.”

Apart from what will or won’t be discussed, what these meetings really do is remind us of the strong ties between Hamas and Egypt’s new president. And they should also remind us that now, more than ever, Israel needs an ally it can count on in the United States.
