Yesterday the House reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to Israel by a voice vote on the United States-Israel Enhanced Security Cooperation Act, S. 2165, a bill ensuring that the United States will supply Israel with arms so it can defend itself, as well as a pledge that the U.S will fight anti-Israel resolutions at the U.N. The original bill was approved by the House in May, but then the Senate later added the proviso that the U.S. could store weapons in Israel that Israel could use in an emergency.
The bill also instructs the United States to produce an “Iron Dome” defense system for Israel that would intercept short-range missiles and to study how the United States could accelerate the sale of F-35 fighter planes to Israel.
The vote had bipartisan support: House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va) said, “Today … we will send this bipartisan bill to the president and deliver the message that during this pivotal and dangerous period in the Middle East, the United States stands tall for our ally Israel.”
Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md) echoed Cantor: “Iran must not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons, as it would dramatically destabilize the region, and Iran’s leaders have already threatened American targets in that part of the world.”
That sound you hear from the White House is the gnashing of teeth.
