Ayatollah Khamenei Embraces Occupy Wall Street Movement

Iran’s supreme ruler, the Ayatollah Khamenei, praised the Ocuppy Wall Street Movement on Thursday and called for the end of U.S. and Israeli dominance in international affairs.

Speaking at the Non-Alignment Movement (NAM) conference in Tehran, Khamenei used the rhetoric of the 99% vs. the 1%. He claimed that just as 99% of Americans allegedly battle “against the wealth and power in America,” so too the 120 nations of NAM battle against “a faulty international structure” dominated by the U.S. and Israel. 

Khamenei’s claims are perfectly in line with what was expected from Iran during the NAM conference, where participants already positioned themselves to push their fellow NAM countries away from western democracy and toward Islamo-centric political systems. Some Iranians claim they want to use the NAM conference to create a new world order.
