Clinton Pledges $45 Million to Syrian Opposition

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pledged $45 million to the Syrian opposition on Friday. This announcement comes as the Obama administration faces heavy opposition over its pledge to send $450 million to Egypt’s Islamist government.

Clinton says the money to Syria will be divided into two payments; $15 million “in non-lethal aid” will go to Bashar al-Assad’s “political opposition” and $30 million will be designated as humanitarian aid. This is on top of the $175 million in aid the U.S. has already provided.

No mention has been made of how the money will be kept out of the hands of Al-Qaeda leaders and other Islamists who have been infiltrating the opposition forces for some time.
