Obama: Israel Doesn't Know What's Best for Israel

When Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu announced Israel would proceed with plans for West Bank settlements following the November U.N. vote on Palestinian statehood, Obama reportedly responded: “Israel doesn’t know what its own best interests are.”

Reporters near Obama at that time said he was not angry with Netanyahu. Rather, Obama said this was the “behavior…he has come to expect” from the Israli PM.

White House spokesman Tommy Vietor would neither confirm nor deny that Obama said these things to reporters. He would only say Obama remains “committed to the goal of peace between Israel and the Palestinians.”

Israeli President Shimon Peres isn’t buying it. He thinks Obama believes Israel doesn’t want peace and is acting in light of that belief.
