Lebanese Prime Minister Resigns Amid Governmental Conflict

Najib Mikati has resigned his post as Prime Minister of Lebanon. 

Mikati did so ostensibly to protest his Parliament’s “inability to agree on a law to govern elections set for later this year” and because of “the Cabinet’s refusal to extend the tenure of the country’s police chief.”

These issues were exasperated by the fact that the countries two biggest “political blocs” are at odds with each other over the Syrian conflict, with fears growing that the conflict may spread into Lebanon. 

Lebanese cities have witnessed an escalation in violence between those who oppose the rule of Bashar al-Assad and those who support him. It looks as if this tension has now overtaken the highest offices of Lebanon as well.
