Syrian activists say government troops have launched an assault to regain control of a northern village where an alleged chemical weapons attack took place earlier this year.

Rebels captured the village of Khan al-Assal outside the city of Aleppo last week.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the army has brought in reinforcements to the area and on Wednesday attacked rebel positions outside the village in apparent attempt to take it back.

The Syrian government and the rebels blame each other for the purported chemical attack in Khan al-Assal in March that killed 30 people.

Last week, the government said that it has agreed with a U.N. team on terms of a possible investigation into the attack.
