China is searching for a woman who gouged out the eyes of a 6-year-old boy. Police in Linfen, Shanxi are offering a 100,000 yuan ($16,000) reward.
A police officer said they could not speculate on a motive. The eyeballs were found at the scene with the corneas intact. There is a cornea donor shortage in China and state media said the woman may have wanted to sell them. From the Associated Press:
Police did not say if they had identified a suspect, and the boy said only that the woman spoke with an accent from outside the area. State media said the boy was recovering in a hospital, but had lost his sight permanently following the brutal ordeal Saturday.
The boy told his parents he was walking on a path when a woman grabbed him. He noticed she had a tool, but could not identify it.
The police said they are doing everything they can to solve the case.
