McCain, Graham Continue Push to Authorize Strike on Syria

In light of Syria’s willingness to give control of their chemical weapons to a Russian-led international body, Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) say the time to authorize a strike is now.

According to Business Insider, on September 9 both Senators said Syria’s acceptance of the Russia overture “should make members of Congress more willing to vote yes.” They want a resolution allowing the use of force passed in the Congress and a “take-it-or-leave-it offer” backed by the threat of force passed in the U.N. within a week.

Neither Senator explained why passing a resolution to strike Syria after they have agreed to give up their chemical weapons would be in the national security interests of the U.S.

President Obama seemed to react differently to the Russian overture, saying he would put strikes on hold if the transfer of chemical weapons from Syrian control can be verified.
