The Taliban has claimed responsibility for a suicide bomb attack on an Afghan army bus in Kabul that left four people dead and 22 wounded Sunday.
Reuters reported that according to police in the Afghan capital of Kabul, the blast wounded a “number of children.”
This is “the latest incident in a worrying surge of violence in the Afghan capital over the past 10 days,” noted Reuters.
According to Reuters, the Taliban has claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing, which is the worst since the Jan. 17 assault that killed 21 civilians inside a Kabul restaurant that was frequented by expatriates. Among the 21 dead were eight Afghans and thirteen foreigners, including three Americans.
The Jan. 17 assault was deemed the deadliest Taliban attack on foreign civilians in Kabul since the beginning of the Afghanistan war more than twelve years ago on October 7, 2001.
On Jan. 23, U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Mark Milley, the second-ranking U.S. military commander in Afghanistan, said that the Afghan forces overmatched the insurgency during the 2013 fighting season and that the Taliban is “on the edge of strategic defeat.”
Kabul has suffered two other attacks in the last 24 hours.
“Two people were wounded in an explosion in the north of the city late on Saturday, while security sources said a rocket landed near the international airport on Kabul’s outskirts without causing casualties,” highlighted the Reuters report.
