Marijuana Legal in Washington State, Still Illegal for Military

With retail stores preparing to sell marijuana in Washington state, Army Lt. General Stephen Lanza stresses, “Our soldiers understand what’s illegal [and] from our perspective, marijuana or any type of illegal drug is something that’s not tolerated.”

According to the Navy Times, Washington’s National Guard Commander Maj. General Bret Daugherty has also made it clear that Guardsmen are not to partake: “Use of marijuana is illegal under federal law and Department of Defense policy.” He said the 2012 passage of an initiative “legalizing marijuana under Washington state law does not change this policy.”

The military does not different between marijuana and “medical marijuana.” They see illegality, period.

Soldiers at Lewis-McChord face random urinalysis tests intended “to root out troops using drugs within [the Army’s] ranks.” And commanders regularly warn personnel that “using pot and getting caught is a quick way to get booted from the Army while risking valuable benefits.”
