One Ukrainian Officer Dead, Five Injured in Sloviansk as More East Ukraine Cities Fall

According to Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, at least one Ukrainian state security officer was killed and five wounded in Sloviansk. This city in Donetsk Oblast is the latest of many in east Ukraine to experience violent demonstrations by pro-Russians.

Avakov took to his Facebook page to announce the situation.

On the side of the separatists there had been an “unidentifiable number” of casualties during the operation in the town of Slaviansk, the minister, Arsen Avakov, said on his Facebook page.

“There were dead and wounded on both sides,” Avakov said.

On Saturday, pro-Russian forces captured more government buildings and the police station. One masked gunmen said they took the police station because it is filled with weapons. Protesters built barricades and supporters cheered on the gunmen in the police station. Even Sloviansk mayor Nelya Stepa came out in support of the gunmen.

East Ukraine has been attacked all weekend.

Journalists on the scene are posting as many updates and pictures to Twitter as they can. Max Seddon at Buzzfeed saw helicopters flying over Sloviansk and said it was armed with rockets.

There are still protests in Luhansk, Kharkiv, Donetsk and other east Ukraine cities.
