Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s disastrous trip to India has triggered widespread mockery after dozens of photos of him in traditional Indian garb surfaced online.

Trudeau was repeatedly photographed wearing Indian clothing and putting his hands together in greeting. Some have argued Trudeau’s attempts to impress the Indian people are actually “cultural appropriation“:

One prominent observer, the Indian politician Omar Abdullah, pointed out that Indians do not dress like this every day:

Indian commentator Sonam Mahajan described Trudeau as an “embarrassment” to Canada’s liberal values after he took off his shoes and forced his wife and young daughter to wear hijabs:

“Stop with the prayer hands. It just looks like you’re out of ideas”:

Attending one event, Trudeau attempted to perform a bhangra dance, which received lukewarm cheers from the audience:

Even left-wing commentator Trevor Noah accused Trudeau of “going too far” with his outfits:

The embarrassment brings an end to a widely unsuccessful trip for Trudeau, who intended to improve relations with both countries but, instead, angered people both in India and in Canada.

Trudeau received a frosty reception from the Indian government from the outset after being welcomed off the plane by the Indian Minister of State for Ministry of Agriculture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, rather than Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In the past, Modi has personally greeted President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on their respective state visits. The Indian government has denied snubbing Trudeau, instead claiming that this is the case:

Trudeau also angered Indian officials by inviting a Sikh terrorist convicted of attempting to kill an Indian politician to a dinner at Canadian high commissioner’s residence. The invitation was later rescinded.

Trudeau also drew criticism in Canada for his use of taxpayer funds to fly out celebrity chef and Liberal Party supporter Vikram Vij.

“Mr. Trudeau can perhaps salvage our relationship (with India), but I think it hit rock bottom with this,” said former Liberal Party Health Minister and former Premier of British Columbia Ujjal Dosanjh this week. “It was already sliding downwards from the moment they got to India”:
